 It seems like the best way to cool down  and rehydrate but is there really a risk when it comes to drinking cold water on a really hot day we've seen some interesting experiences through social media like this one out of texas adam schwab took to facebook to let people know about his body going into shock after working in a hundred degree weather then drinking very cold water he specifically wrote i started seeing spots my stomach got extremely nauseous and my hands and feet started tingling I felt like i was gonna throw up so i opened the truck door and the next thing i know i'm face first on the ground and my dad's rolling me over wiping off my face now for adam this seemed like a traumatizing experience but is this just an isolated case of temperature extremes or is this really a risk to any Canadian it's always important to be careful when reading things on social media because we don't know the full details of the story going into shock from drinking ice cold water on a hot day is not really somethingthat you need to worry about and it would be a very rare event for that to happen but in this case it could have happened so what would the medical explanation be what happened to the young man may have been that he suffered from heat exhaustion combined with a brain freeze headachea brain freeze headache also known as an ice cream headache cold neuralgia or a spinopalatine ganglioneuralgia is when you get a headache or pain in your face behind your eyes behind your sinuses and behind your nose from drinking cold fluids or eating cold food what happens is that the cold causes the vessels on the roof of your mouth and at the back of your mouth to contract and then after that the vessels rapidly expand and that expansion causes a pain signal to be sent through the trigeminal nerve into your brain and that causes the sensation of discomfort or headache so overall it looks like we may be able to link this interesting health and weather related story to a little bit of brain freeze remember it's really important to keep hydrated during the summer months and you can keep hydrated through foods like cucumbers strawberries and watermelon and these should all hold a very low risk when it comes to developing brain freeze.
